Supermarket giant Aldi has confirmed it will open another store on the Isle of Wight, this time in Newport.

Joining Costa and McDonald’s, Aldi is the latest national chain to announce it will be heading to St George’s Retail Park.

The new store will complement existing Aldi outlets in Cowes and Lake.

The news was confirmed by a license application to the Isle of Wight Council, where the supermarket giant is seeking permission to sell alcohol. If the license is approved, it would allow the store to sell alcohol to customers during all proposed opening hours – 6 a.m. to midnight, Monday through Sunday.

The documents submitted as part of the application call for the license to start from September 8, although the store is not yet physically built. In fact, not a single shovel was driven into the ground…

A second round of planning permission for St George’s Retail Park was approved earlier this year following design changes – which saw the addition of the Costa Drive-Thru and a decrease in total retail space at the detail.

Now, 4 years later, preliminary work has started on the new football ground near the Whippingham Racecourse roundabout, but final planning conditions are awaiting release before construction work can begin. Isle of Wight Council required the football ground to be available before retail units could be brought into use.
