Mikel Arteta outlines his goals after signing new contract with Arsenal

Arsenal are preparing for another decisive weekend in their bid to crack the top four as they could potentially take a crucial step towards the Champions League.

On Saturday, their local and positional rivals Tottenham Hotspur will face the unenviable task of taking on Liverpool at Anfield. It means that by the time the Gunners kick off on Sunday against relegation-threatened Leeds United, they may have the chance to move up four points.

It would be a huge boost for manager Mikel Arteta and his players, with Thursday’s derby with Spurs looming.

Although Arsenal’s status as a Champions League side for next season is yet to be assured, the club clearly believe Arteta is the man to take them there.

On Friday, the former midfielder was confirmed to have agreed a new contract at the Emirates Stadium, having helped the team make significant improvements this season.

The news will delight Arteta, who has seen his position challenged in the past during various difficult times on the fringes of north London. However, those reservations have seemingly vanished for those who matter at the club.

“I’m excited, grateful and really, really happy today,” he said. “When I spoke to Josh [Kroenke] he could see the club in the same place and he wanted to take the club like I wanted to. So everything he said, and what Stan said when I was with them both, they always lived up to it.”

Saliba transfer request made

Former Arsenal striker Paul Merson believes the club should take advantage of defender William Saliba if concerns remain over his ability to play in the Premier League.

The young Frenchman has performed well on loan at Marseille this season, getting Gunners fans excited about what he could potentially offer when he returns to the club this summer.

Arsenal have found a strong pairing in Gabriel and Ben White this season and as a result, Merson believes the club can afford to cash in on Saliba if he is still not ready.

“There must be a reason why he’s been on loan three times from the club. Has he been torn apart in training? I don’t see why he’s still on loan otherwise.

“Arsenal paid a lot of money for him, but I think if someone offers him their money, they’ll take it straight away. He’s been here almost three years now and he can’t throw a finger at it. look. Maybe Mikel Arteta watched him train and decided he was far from ready.”

Nelson reaches European final

Feyenoord will face Roma in the inaugural Europa Conference League final, with Reiss Nelson, on loan from Arsenal, playing a key role in their season to remember.

Nelson was in the starting XI for both legs of the semi-final against Marseille, as the Dutch side won the first 3-2 at home and then dug in for a 0-0 at the Stade Vélodrome.

Overall, the loan has been difficult for the 22-year-old as he has started just nine games in the Eredivisie this season. However, he has established his place in the starting XI in recent weeks and still has the chance to end the campaign on a high against Jose Mourinho’s Giallorossi.
